You should never display your weaknesses, and also never show that you are tough. It is always best to stay neutral.
Let people perceive you as neither weak nor strong, unless you have a strategic reason.
When you show you are weak, people may take advantage of you. If you show you are tough people may want to compete or challenge you.
What does it mean to be neutral?
A neutral person observes, remains quiet, and blends in.
Like in The Art Of War, being neutral is strategic.
Neutrality involves studying situations before reacting. It focuses on executing your work without becoming a target. Being neutral means having no enemies and maintaining friendly terms with everyone.
How do you stay neutral?
Maintaining neutrality requires emotional regulation and strategic thinking. Avoid showing fear, weakness, strength, or dominance to operate without drawing attention.
This prevents being perceived as vulnerable or as a challenge. Neutrality means not being attached to outcomes, ensuring decisions remain unaffected by others. It allows focus on work rather than complicated interpersonal dynamics.
1. Why you should never act weak, scared or show fear?
When you show signs of fear or vulnerability, you automatically signal to others that you can be easily influenced or intimidated. The moment you show or act scared, you become a target.
Those around you may sense your fear and exploit it, whether intentionally or unintentionally. This can lead to situations where you feel obligated or are pressured into making decisions that do not align with your values or best interests.
Sun Tzu, the renowned Chinese military strategist who authored "The Art of War," once quoted,
When others see that your weapons are not sharp and soldiers are tired, the other rulers will quickly rise up to take advantage of your weakness.
Which means because you are weak or perceived to be weak, Sun Tzu says others will approach you to take advantage of your situation for their benefit.
This was written 2500 years ago. Sun Tzu warns us not to be seen weak or have fear.
Fear can also blur our judgment, preventing us from thinking clearly and making rational choices. Therefore, maintaining a calm and composed state of mind is important for protecting your position and ensuring that you are treated with respect.
2. Why you should never act tough?
On the flip side, projecting an image of toughness can also have its disadvantages. The moment you act tough, you become a challenge. This can provoke competition and conflict, drawing unnecessary attention to yourself and potentially putting you in unnecessary harm's way.
For example, there are some people who feels insecure when they meet someone who appears tough. They are compelled to prove their strength. Thats when they confront and challenge to prove themselves.
Acting tough may lead others to test your limits, creating an environment of competition rather than collaboration. It can also push away potential allies.
Instead of fostering a supportive atmosphere, a show of toughness in one's character can create barriers and misunderstandings.
Therefore, it is important to strike a balance between confidence and humility, presenting yourself as approachable while still maintaining your boundaries or authority.
3. Why stay neutral, and be unreadable?
It is best to stay neutral: calm, present, and unreadable. This approach not only protects you but also fosters an atmosphere of stability and predictability. This is the very same energy that keeps you safe in a toxic workplace, helping you avoid wrong relationships, whether in business or personal life, and steering clear of dangerous situations.
The ability to remain unreadable means that people cannot manipulate you when they cannot read your intentions or emotions. This unpredictability can serve as a powerful deterrent against those who might seek to exploit your weakness.
There is a wise saying from the great military strategist Sun Tzu, who wrote "The Art of War" 2,500 years ago. He said,
Know yourself and know your enemy and you will not worry the results of a hundred battles.
What Sun Tzu meant was to have a sharp self-awareness of your environment and the people around you. This awareness makes it easier for you to maneuver complex social dynamics with greater ease.
Always take time to get to know people first. Understand who is your friend and who is not. This includes recognizing the subtle cues and behaviors that indicate trustworthiness or insincerity.
There are some that can be your good friends and some you may not get along with. Awareness is key to discerning the motivations of those around you, enabling you to make informed decisions about whom to engage with and how to handle people in different situations.
So, what does it mean to be neutral? You can say that staying neutral is a complex approach that requires practice and mindfulness. By managing your emotions and having a deep understanding of interpersonal dynamics, you can handle people with diplomacy and efficiency.
